Research and Evidence Based Practice

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the process of collecting, processing, and implementing research findings to improve clinical practice, the work environment, or patient outcomes. Utilizing the EBP approach to nursing practice helps us provide the highest quality and most cost-efficient patient care possible.  Evidence-based practice is a priority for modern health care.  Practice based decisions should be designed  based on the best available evidence, reflective of patient values and focused on safe and efficient care [Williams & Cullen, 2016]

Evidence can be found from :
  • Research [research trials, audit, surveys]
  • Clinical practice [personal experience, reflection, local surveys, patient feedback].

Research and Innovative Practice are often confused when related to clinical practice.  Definitions are given here:
Research : The purpose of research is to seek new knowledge to restructure or reorganise existing bodies of information, to verify extant theory or apply existing knowledge to a new situation.
Characteristics :  Systematic  Investigation : Hypothesis Testing : Objective and formal academic procedure.
Clinical Innovation : Occurs when a practitioner proposes to use a treatment, procedure or intervention in a way that deviates from commonly accepted practice in a clinical encounter.
Characteristics :  Non standard treatment :  Change from currently accepted practice : Modification of accepted procedures in incremental steps.

Academic research projects, audit, surveys, guidelines, policies, empiric personal experience, reflection, patient feedback ALL INFORM EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE

Research and EBP Abstracts from poster competitions : 2008 – 2019.  A wealth of examples of poster extracts on a wide variety of topics.  Also PDF’s of posters can be viewed.

All of the above cited ASPAN resources are open to all to access.  There are some sections open only to ASPAN members.
