National Perioperative Forums

BARNA contributes to a number of professional forums involved in developing our anaesthetic and recovery speciality within the UK.

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence [NICE]
NICE was set up in 1999 to provide guidance on health technology, clinical practice, health promotion and social care services.  NICE works to achieve equal distribution of health care resources across the country and to benchmark products and services.

BARNA contributed developing NICE Guidelines on Perioperative Care published 19th August  2020.

Royal College of Anaesthetists [RCoA]
GPAS = Guidelines for the Provision of Anaesthesia Services
The RCoA published the GPAS Preoperative Assessment and Preparation chapter, GPAS Intraoperative Care chapter and GPAS Postoperative Care chapters in 2016 and 2017. As part of the NICE reaccreditation process, the College conducts a full review of GPAS chapters every 5 years and the decision was made to amalgamate these 3 chapters which now form the GPAS for the Perioperative Care of Elective and Urgent Care Patients chapter.

Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine  [FICM]
EPC = Enhanced Perioperative Care : published in October 2020
The FICM is the organisation involved with the training, assessment, practice and continuing professional development of Intensive Care Medicine Consultants in the UK.
A multidisciplinary working party looking into the Enhanced Care needs of perioperative patients within the PACU and beyond was founded in 2010.  Guidelines are aimed at improving the management of patients who required higher levels of monitoring or interventions than are normally expected on a ward but do not require admission to critical care unit.

‘Implementation of Enhanced Care services also has the potential to improve patient flow, support operative scheduling and release capacity within critical care, which is absolutely vital in the current landscape.’
