Reflective Practice

Reflection on Practice is now an integral part of learning in clinical practice.

Everyone reflects informally for example by chatting about work experiences to friends, and by so doing we make sense of whatever incident has caused us pleasure, anxiety, confusion.   Reflection on Practice as a teaching aid assumes a more formal approach with the use of a Model of Reflection to guide the process. Gibbs is a well known model and this presentation takes you through Reflection using Gibbs.

Reflective written accounts are now required for Revalidation by NMC
You must have prepared five written reflective accounts in the three year period since your registration was last renewed or you joined the register. Each reflective account must be recorded on the approved form and must refer to:
  • an instance of your CPD, and/or
  • a piece of practice-related feedback you have received, and/or
  • an event or experience in your own professional practice
and how they relate to the Code.

You must have had a reflective discussion with another NMC registrant, covering your five written reflective accounts on your CPD and/or practice-related feedback and/or an event or experience in your practice and how this relates to the Code.*

BARNA Learning and Teaching Resources provide opportunities for reflection within the Workbooks.  PACU is an ideal environment to master the art of assessment, intervention and evaluation. It is a dynamic area where the patient undergoes profound physiological change in a short period of time.  Reflecting back on those changes, finding out why they occur and how to best intervene will deepen your understanding this speciality.   Using a log book to jot down details of interesting cases is an excellent exercise and will facilitate preparation for Revalidation.
