BARNA was founded in 1987 with a specific focus on anaesthesia and recovery nurses in Birmingham.  For over 30 years BARNA has hosted excellent annual conferences, study days and discussion forums.  Information about current BARNA events [conference, study days, webinars] can be found within the Conference and Events section of this website.  BARNA has published Standards of Care and fielded audits of practice.

​Lesley Dowding founds ARNA [Anaesthetic and Recovery Association] – Annual Conference commenced in Birmingham [1987-2003].

Committee enlarged : ARNA now renamed BARNA when it becomes a Charity

BARNA becomes the UK representative for IFNA.
1997
Quarterly Journal well established.
1999
​Website established.  Study days on Clinical Scenarios and Ethics and Law.
2002
Irish Anaesthetic & Recovery Nurses Association founded.
2003
Annual Conference moves to Brighton.  Leaders of ASPAN and IARNA all attend. Standards published.
2004
​BARNA Clinical Practice Forum in London held : BARNA contributing to NWWA, PCC Skills for Health
2007
Study Days on Difficult Airway in London.

​Annual Conference moved to London, City Hall. Early talks with ASPAN, IARNA, Canada on holding an International meeting for perianaesthesia nurses.

BARNA supported study days in York and Surrey. ‘BARNA Talks’ on Staffing PACU was very successful.
2010
BARNA working with AAGBI on UK National Competencies for PACU.   BARNA planning first ICPAN Conference.
2011
1st international meeting for peri-anaesthesia nurses in Toronto, Canada .

Social Media for BARNA set up.  Talks on BARNA hosting the 2016 IFNA Conference commenced.

Study day in Surrey on Thermoregulation with Molnlycke.
