anaesthesia over that span. I truly feel part of the history of anaesthesia! I am also an Advanced Life Support Instructor, which I enjoy very much. This enables me to spend some time in a completely different role but still enhances my role in anaesthetics both clinically and in a teaching capacity. I am very pleased to have the privilege to Chair BARNA for the next two years and look forward to the challenge. I have a hectic family life and for some reason keep adding to the fur covered variety in the house. There is certainly never a dull moment!

Since then I have completed the ENB 176 perioperative course and the ENB 182 anaesthetic course. My role as secretary of BARNA includes maintaining minutes and records of all committee meetings and this year I am also organising the catering and accommodation for the conference. I am married and outside of work enjoy traveling abroad. During the winter months I can be found most Saturdays watching Richmond FC play rugby.

I briefly returned to Finland, but since 1982 I took up a post as an anaesthetic charge nurse in London and I have not looked back. I completed my anaesthetic nurse training in King's College Hospital in 1983. I have worked in my current senior charge nurse's post since 1984, my post has stayed the same when the hospital either has change its name or location, currently Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich London. I am lucky to be able to mix patient care with my management responsibilities. I truly believe in value of nurses in anaesthetics and recovery and would have preferred to see maintenance anaesthetic nursing model as part of the career development for us in England.
