I qualified in 1979 in Sheffield as an SEN and converted to RN in 2000. In 2008 I gained a degree at the University of York and recently have undertaken the role of Senior Sister in PACU at York Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, enjoying the challenges this role offers.
I have for a number of years admired the work that the BARNA Committee (past and present) offer in which to support the PACU and Anaesthetic staff and hope that now I will be able to give something back.
My hobbies include walking; gardening, entertaining, cake decorating and foreign travel although time does not allow for any of these in enough quantity!

Markku Viherlaiho
Treasurer
markku.viherlaiho@barna.co.uk
I qualified as a nurse in 1978 I have always worked in
anaesthetics and recovery. I started my career as maintenance anaesthetic nurse in Helsinki University Hospital. I moved to England in 1979.
|
 |
 |
I briefly returned to Finland, but since 1982 I took up a post as an anaesthetic charge nurse in London and I have not looked back. I completed my anaesthetic nurse training in King's College Hospital in 1983. I have worked in my current senior charge nurse's post since 1984, my post has stayed the same when the hospital either has change its name or location, currently Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich London. I am lucky to be able to mix patient care with my management responsibilities. I truly believe in value of nurses in anaesthetics and recovery and would have preferred to see maintenance anaesthetic nursing model as part of the career development for us in England. |

operating theatre. I have been an anaesthetic nurse for 23 years so have been lucky enough to see anaesthesia over that span. I truly feel part of the history of anaesthesia! I am also an Advanced Life Support Instructor, which I enjoy very much. This enables me to spend some time in a completely different role but still enhances my role in anaesthetics both clinically and in a teaching capacity. I have a hectic family life and for some reason keep adding to the fur covered variety in the house. There is certainly never a dull moment! |
